Health Care Humor

Published June 24, 2008 2:06 PM by Stephen Cornell

Longtime ADVANCE for Managers of Respiratory Care contributor and respiratory care practitioner Brent Swager is the undisputed master of the funny health care essay.

Here's an excerpt from Swager's June column.

That's two dollars for the coffee," the cashier announced.

"Pay her," I told New Guy.

He started to protest, but I'd already given him my "New Guy" indoctrination, and he understood that a price must be paid for learning from the best.

"You're lucky," I said. "Back when I was starting out, you had to wash your mentor's car and do his laundry. Luckily for you, we live in the age of enlightenment."

I stopped at the cafeteria exit and held out a small piece of plastic upright in my palm. "Snatch the oxygen connector from my hand, Grasshopper," I said to my young student, using my best "Kung Fu" accent from the hit television series of the 70s. Anticipating his catlike move, I closed my fingers over the connector before he could grab it.

"Ah," I said. "You will be ready when you can beat The Master at this game."

"Are you well?" he asked me. "I mean, mentally well?"
