Don't Cross The Anti-Vaccination Crowd

Published August 19, 2008 10:12 AM by Stephen Cornell

I missed this when it happened, but actress Amanda Peet apparently angered the anti-vaccine movement with this comment in July.

"Frankly, I feel that parents who don't vaccinate their children are parasites."

It seems strange to me that with all the unsafe things parents expose their children to, there's actually a huge movement to keep them from being exposed to vaccines.

Kudos.  It does seem odd that parents would risk exposing their children to potentially fatal diseases due to unfounded concerns over Autism or crazy religious beliefs.  It would seem that the first duty of a good parent would b to protect their child from preventable injuries and illnesses.  Immunizations for children should be mandated, regardless of parental objections.  When parents refuse to act in their children's best interest, then it is the responsibility of the government to step in.
