Physician Assistants Needed in Maryland

There's a continuing shortage of PAs in Maryland, according to the Baltimore Business Journal.

Maryland hospitals continue to grapple with a shortage of health care professionals to fill jobs, according to a study released Wednesday by the Maryland Hospital Association.

Vacancy rates for physician assistants, occupational therapists, speech therapists and respiratory therapists soared above 15 percent in 2007. Vacancy rates for respiratory therapists showed the greatest increase at nearly 20 percent, up from about 14 percent in 2006.

In a related matter, the American Medical Association House of Delegates asked Maryland to stop using the postal abbreviation "MD" or face charges of impersonating a physician.
