Fellowship Supports PA Research
In the Oct. 30 issue of AAPA News is an interesting article about the 10th anniversary of the PA Foundation's Breitman-Dorn research fellowship.
When the PA Foundation (PAF) announced the establishment of the Jerald A. Breitman & Stephen J. Dorn Endowed Research Fellowship on May 25, 1998, the PAF Board of Trustees wondered if anyone would apply.
“That was a big question,” recalled Breitman, a member of the PAF Board of Trustees, who established the generous endowment in honor of his life partner, Steven Dorn, who died in June 1995. “We knew PAs wanted to do the kind of small grants that we had previously been funding in the foundation, but whether anybody really wanted to do this level of doctoral research was uncertain.
“I was surprised when they told me the first year they had 15 applications. That was a significant number for what I thought was a brand new opportunity for PAs.”
“I was highly appreciative for the Breitman-Dorn grant,” said PA Roderick Hooker, the first recipient of the fellowship grant in 1999, whose doctoral dissertation focused on the cost-benefit analysis model of PA employment.
“It allowed me to offset some of my costs to produce my dissertation.
