PAs vs. PTs

Published November 20, 2008 11:49 AM by Stephen Cornell

Apparently, physician assistant students and physical therapy students do not get along, at least at one school.

PA students are the nerds who bring their laptop to class, sit in the front row, ask too many questions and try too hard. PT students, on the other hand, are cliquish snobs who claim academic and professional superiority over the PA students. Hello, middle school. ...

During our first anatomy test (which PA and PT students take together), the PT student council made a rather insulting sign and posted it on the classroom door. In theory, it was very thoughtful, as they were wishing the PT students well. However, they included some pretty rough stabs at the PA students. One of our lab assistants was so upset at this cattiness that she tore the sign down.

While in the library a few months ago, I overheard some PT students talking about how stupid the PA students are and how they outperformed us on the first anatomy test (which, by the way, is purely speculative).

PA student and blogger Bridget finds all of this more than a little juvenile.

I didn't think this level of superficiality was possible amongst graduate students; we are, after all, in our mid-20s.

If she's suprised by this behavior in PA and PT students, wait until she's exposed to some segments of the PA profession ...
