Legislative Update for Illinois PAs

Published January 30, 2009 2:54 PM by Terri Schaefer

The Illinois Academy of Physician Assistants announced that they will soon be submitting language for four bills to the Illinois Legislative Reference Bureau.

The goals are:

1) Adding Emergency Disaster Language to the PA Practice Act allowing PAs to assist in an emergency disaster setting.

2) Redefining the PA Advisory Committee in the PA Practice Act allowing an exchange of information with the Division of Professional Regulation regarding the PA profession and is issues in Illinois.

3) Gaining signature authority for Controlled Substances Schedule II, providing improved patient access to comprehensive care in Illinois.

4) Removing the supervising physician to PA ratio allowing physicians the opportunity to hire full-time or part-time PAs in their practices for increased efficiency within the practice offering flexible hours for PAs and offering the physician a cost effective solution to practice management.

A colleague was at the Hurricane Katrina disaster site, and he was required to display his state licensure at the disaster site.  The AAPA/PA state organizations proceed to work with states to legislate the issues.  In spite of licensure regulations medical providers should comprehend in the U.S. all states have disaster site regulation and compliance.  From my experience medical providers and PAs increasing access to patient care at these emergency disaster sites could obtain their Core Disaster Life Support or CDLS to add on to our cardiopulmonary resuscitation and ACLS certification.  CDLS would ensure medical providers' compliance regarding emergency disaster site protocols.

As a practicing PA who was at the Hurricane Katrina disaster site, it is important to recall health care providers attending disaster sites may encumber the disaster site process by fueling the demand for shelter, water, and other resource at disaster sites.  The best method for health care providers to help may be to take a step backward and offer monetary help through a disaster relief organization.
