PA Students Partner with Girl Scouts to Address Teen Pregnancy

Published February 20, 2009 2:09 PM by Terri Schaefer

Six PA students at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio have partnered with the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas to create a pregnancy prevention program called Get R.E.A.L. (Reality Education for Adolescent Life). According to a press release, they are “committed to addressing the teen pregnancy crisis in San Antonio and the surrounding counties.” The program uses an interactive educational approach to empower adolescent girls to make informed life choices.

Here’s some more information about the program and an upcoming fundraiser next week:

To ensure that the Get R.E.A.L. program reaches as many teenage girls as possible, Girl Scouts and physician assistant students are hosting a public fundraiser and information session. A preview of the Get R.E.A.L. teen pregnancy prevention program will be held at the Sally Cheever Girl Scout Leadership Center, 811 N. Coker Loop in San Antonio, on Feb. 26 from 6:30-8 p.m.

Using teen-oriented curriculum, activities in the Get R.E.A.L. program will focus on educating teens about the realities of pregnancy and motherhood, including wearing a pregnancy belly and caring for an infant with the use of an infant simulator. This new program will be launched by Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas on April 24.
