Big Physician Assistant Numbers in N.Y.
With the accreditation this month of the physician assistant program at SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, N.Y., there are now 20 PA programs in the state of New York.
The American Academy of Physician Assistants estimates that there are about 8,000 practicing PAs in New York. That's more than any other state. California is No. 2 with around 7,200 practicing PAs.
In 2008, New York ranked sixth in PAs per capita, with about 408 PAs for every million residents.
