Physician Assistant Clinical Doctorate Summit News

Published March 30, 2009 11:35 AM by Stephen Cornell

The American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Physician Assistant Education Association have posted a statement on last week’s PA Clinical Doctorate Summit.

Forty-five people participated in the summit meeting.

Here’s a set of recommendations from the meeting:

The summit participants came to consensus on the following set of recommendations.

1. The PA profession endorses the master's degree as the single, entry-level, and terminal degree for the profession.
2. The PA profession opposes the entry-level, PA-specific clinical doctorate.
3. The PA profession supports advanced professional development and education, including the option of non-profession-specific postgraduate doctorates.
4. The PA profession should explore with physician education groups the development of a model for advanced standing for PAs who desire to become physicians (sometimes called a "bridge program.")

Although the AAPA and PAEA supported the summit financially, the activities of the summit were independent of the organizations.

I think their decision was wise. While a clinical doctorate would have been cool, it would also complicate the fragile relations between PA and MD/DO.

The decision I do not like is the plan to pursue a PA-MD bridge program. I believe it will attract people to the PA profession for the wrong reasons.
