AAPA Names New COO

Sabrina Lea Smith, DrHA, CRA, is the new chief operating officer of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

From the AAPA's press release:

(Alexandria, VA) – The American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), the only national professional society to represent all physician assistants in every area of medicine, named Sabrina Lea Smith, DrHA, CRA, Chief Operating Officer, effective today, April 1, 2009.

“We are delighted with the addition of Sabrina to our team,” said AAPA chief executive officer Bill Leinweber. “Sabrina brings a mix of financial and strategic management expertise, along with a record of building alliances to facilitate change and collaboration. It is the right combination of skills and experience to provide operational oversight of the strategic plan our Board recently approved,” said Leinweber.

Smith is a senior health care and research executive with 20 years of progressive and diverse experience in academic medical centers, nonprofit health care system and association environments.

Most recently, Smith worked as Chief Operating Officer of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, where she was responsible for overseeing the administrative and operational departments of the organization. Prior experience includes serving as Vice President, Office of Contracts and Grants Management, for MedStar Research Institute, where she was responsible for management of a central research administration office supporting the MedStar Health System.

Smith has a Doctorate in Health Administration and Leadership from the Medical University of South Carolina, a Masters Degree in Health Administration and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics from the University of Colorado at Denver.
