ADVANCE Blog for PAs

Stephen Cornell, 1967-2009

Published April 22, 2009 12:58 PM by Michael Gerchufsky
Stephen Cornell, who had been on the ADVANCE for Physician Assistants editorial staff for nearly 13 years -- and who had been our colleague and close friend -- died yesterday. Steve battled bipolar disease for as long as we knew him, and ultimately that was what took him from us.

It is no exaggeration to say that Steve's reporting on the PA profession over the years, his encyclopedic knowledge of PA history, politics, policy and personalities, and his deep passion for and belief in PAs, has had an incalculable impact on the profession. His comprehensive coverage of PAs -- evidenced by the prodigious body of work bearing his byline in our archives, his daily updates of the ADVANCE Blog for PAs (which he founded long before "blog" became a household word) and his latest project, ADVANCE Web videos -- stands as testament to his commitment.

Steve was looking forward to attending the annual AAPA conference in San Diego next month, where Team ADVANCE will participate in the PA Foundation's Fun Walk/Run. While memorial arrangements are incomplete, I can think of no better way to honor Stephen Cornell's relentless promotion of and advocacy for PAs every single day than to support the PA Foundation's mission in his memory. Steve leaves behind his wife, Jennifer, and his two sons, Christopher and Tommy. Please keep them in your thoughts.

I worked with Steve for the past 3 years while here at ADVANCE and I always admired his wealth of knowledge about the PA profession. You could tell he had a true interest in the field and he will be missed. I wish I had a chance to get to know him better, but what I did know of him makes me sad now that we've lost him. I will keep his family, both at home and in the office, in my thoughts.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Steve during his time covering the Thunder. I enjoyed his company, and reading his work.  He will be greatly missed by all.

I'm blessed to have known Stephen. May his family find the strength to cope during such a devastating time.

It was a blessing to get to know Steve through covering Thunder games and even the occasional high school game as a stringer for the Bucks County Courier Times. I'll miss his pleasant, easy going presence in the Waterfront Park Press Box. May he find peace, and may his family be in our prayers at this most difficult time.

Wow. I'm rarely at a loss for words, but this puts me close. Steve was always a friendly face and voice at Thunder games when I covered that team in the 1990s. Wow. RIP

I did not know Steve very well, but enjoyed reading work. The times I did meet him usaully at a Thunder game or another sporting event we always got along very well.

Peace and strength to his wife and children.

We will all miss Steve's gentle soul, his unique sense of humor and easy-going style.

May he now rest in peace and his family be blessed with the strength to overcome this terrible tragedy.

In addition to writing for ADVANCE, Steve covered the Trenton Thunder Minor League Baseball team for the Bucks County Courier Times.  He was one of the team's regular beat writers since the team came to be in 1994.

Steve's  friendly personality and calm demeanor will be missed in the press box at Waterfront Park and throughout the Trenton Thunder community.
