Published May 5, 2009 3:23 PM by Terri Schaefer

California PA Karen Kushner was one of two women honored with a Making a Difference for Women award from the Soroptimist International of Chico for working to improve the lives of women and girls.

Nancy Morgans-Ferguson and Karen Kushner founded Shalom Free Clinic about two years ago. The clinic offers free medical, mental health and spiritual care to anyone who shows up on Sunday afternoons. The clinic provides under insured and uninsured children and adults with health screening, primary care interventions, health service, and education, including free physical and mental and behavioral health services.

Shalom Free Clinic services some 1,000 people and is run by volunteers. Morgans-Ferguson directs the clinic and Kushner is physician assistant/medical coordinator.
