“Royal Pains” Doc Prefers Physician Associate

Published June 23, 2009 5:56 PM by Terri Schaefer

"Royal Pains" is now three episodes in, and the PA character, Divya, played a big role in the most recent episode. This past Thursday, Hank’s PA was by his side a lot of the time, and in many instances, showed her medical expertise. And besides the health care aspect, I like that Divya’s a little sassy.

There are two parts I wanted to be sure to point out. First, when Hank’s brother Evan showed him a pamphlet for “HankMed,” the official name of their concierge doctor business, the camera quickly panned over the staff members, and Divya’s credentials were PA-C.

And in an interesting scene at the end—I had to rewind to make sure I heard it correctly—Hank tells Divya they need to figure out things like her compensation and her title. She asks, “What’s wrong with physician assistant?” Hank's response: “People seem to only hear the second half of it. I was thinking associate.”

Wow! I didn't see that one coming. I can’t wait to see if the characters discuss Divya’s title any more; she is still referred to as a physician assistant on the show’s Web site.

What do you think? And will you continue to watch the show? If so, don’t forget—it’s on Thursdays at 10 p.m. on USA.

Wow, that's great.  Is one of the show's writer's a PA?! ;-)

Physician Associate makes so much sense.

I liked it too, especially since I graduated from the Yale Physician Associate Program.  So far, good consumer advertising for PAs!

That is fantastic.  It is probably the most succinct argument for the name change.
