Thriving Under Enemy Fire

Chosen from approximately 820 candidates, Capt. Anthony Bohl received the 2009 Surgeon General of the Army's Physician Assistant Recognition Award last week.

Bohl has served three combat tours since 2003 and is now studying at the Beaumont Army Medical Center.

"Our physician assistants are one of the most deployed resources in Army medicine," said Col. James Baunchalk, Beaumont commander. "We're trying to produce more of them. But they do it (deploy to combat zones) and they do it with enthusiasm."

Throughout his time in combat, Bohl fulfilled his duties as a PA while facing incredible challenges.

Bohl's assignments put him at the point of attack throughout the invasion of Iraq. He was in Baghdad's Sadr City when insurgents regularly ambushed coalition forces. His most recent duty was at a far-flung outpost in the mountains of Afghanistan where al-Qaida operated.

Read the full article, which includes detailed accounts of Bohl's experiences as an Army PA.
