Pharmacist: PAs Are 'Barefoot Doctors' With Minimum Training

Published September 17, 2009 11:24 AM by Terri Schaefer

California pharmacist Barbara Morris has made her thoughts about physician assistants known in a news release about the ramifications of a primary care physician shortage under a new health care plan. She insinuates that PAs have minimal training, and even goes so far as to use quotations when referring to the PA profession, which leads me to believe she doesn’t think it’s even legitimate.

We already have "barefoot doctors" When you last made an appointment to see your primary care physician did you see the doctor or a "physician assistant"? Before you saw the "physician assistant" you probably saw a "technician" who took your blood pressure, and another "technician" who weighed you and asked some questions.

Democratization of health care has been in the works for a long time. In my profession of pharmacy (well, it's not really a profession anymore -- pharmacists are just shills for the drug companies) it used to be that the pharmacist filled prescriptions. Now, a "certified technician" does that. But the pharmacist is still responsible for errors made by the "certified technician"

Under Obamacare, an unlimited number of "barefoot doctor" types of occupations requiring only minimum training can be created to make up for the shortage of primary care physicians. Too bad for patients, but Obama will be able to gloat that he created jobs.

What do you think about the author’s theories?

I'm glad she is giving President Obama credit for the success of the PA profession...ha ha ha.  That's like saying Al Gore created the internet.  Maybe she should get her facts straight before she spews her negativity across the interwebs.

Wow. She sounds really disheartened about her own profession. Maybe if she's that unhappy she should get out of the medical field.

I am a Physician assistant.  Just wanted to point out that at the school I attended the pharmacy program was only a year longer than PAs.  maybe they are undertrained too then.

it is a same that this kind of bickering goes on in the healthcare field amongst supposedly professionals. I am currently a respiratory therapist whose ultimate goal is to become a physician assistant. but before becoming a respiratory therapist I was a certified nursing assistant for 13 years.I have worked my way up from the VERY BOTTOM. It is a shame that we ALL as professionals have ONE COMMON GOAL....that is to care for the PATIENT and somehow that has gotten LOST. WE ALL have our DIFFERENT roles in the care of the patient. For Ms. Morris to have said the things that she said was wrong!! ALL HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONS should be treated with respect for we are gatekeepers to the patients well-being and care.

Interesting site. Interesting person. Doesn't seem to like the Pharm techs and complains about others in her profession becoming "shills for the drug companies". Maybe this is just a way to increase sales of her "Boomer Lifestyle management business" and books.

This is why I love living in America because you do have the right to say almost anything you want, and with the Internet one is sure to find an audience.

At least she knows a little about "Barefoot doctors"..lol Oh well, you can't please everyone...
