Helping Hand
Preview: CSM 2009
Hand rehabilitation is often considered within the realm of OT and the majority of certified hand therapists (CHT) are, in fact, occupational therapists. However, there is also more to hand rehab than the important considerations of fine motor control and activities of daily living. Range of motion and athletic function, for example, certainly can fall under the domain of physical therapy. To illustrate this point, "Management and Rehabilitation of Sports-Related Injuries of the Wrist and Hand Complex" will be presented as a continuing education session at CSM 2009 on Wednesday, February 11, from 8 to 11 a.m.
Session speakers Diane Coker, DPT, PT, CHT, and Cuong Pho, DPT, OCS, SCS, CHT, ATC, will provide participants with current examination, evaluation and treatment skills for the management of common sports-related wrist and hand injuries. The course will also provide an overview of the patho-anatomy and patho-biomechanics of each injury, while emphasizing management from initial injury to return-to-sports activities.
According to the APTA Website, upon completion of this course attendees will be able to; 1) Describe the pathology, anatomy and biomechanics of each injury; 2) Describe histology, healing principles and fracture classification; 3) Describe acute management, including the appropriate referral, to other medical providers; 4) Describe rehabilitation procedures; and 5) Describe the usage of splints and tapes for rehabilitation and return-to-sports activities.
