See You in Chicago!
A week from now, I'm really looking forward to heading to Chicago for APTA's annual Combined Sections Meeting. Sort of.
Here in the Philadelphia suburbs ADVANCE calls home, we're living the "good" life this winter so far, with little if any snow and many days of above-average temperatures. As I write this the sun shines brightly outside our offices and while it's a crisp 40 degrees or so, there's nary a flake in sight for the near future.
Winter isn't my favorite season. So when I learned APTA would be hosting CSM in Chicago this year -- in February! -- I had a tough choice to decide to go or not. In the end, I overcame my dread of cold and decided to break my rule about avoiding flying in February, because Chicago is such a great city to visit. It's full of history, lots of shopping (of course) and architectural charm. The last time ADVANCE was there was in 2003, in July (ahhhh!), and I still lament I didn't get to see all the museums and sites I had intended. Although what with the low temps and predictable wind, opting for a cab might be a better bet than walking.
And the history -- everywhere you look you are surrounded by it, in the landmark buildings and open areas. All reflect the history of the city that rose literally from ashes in the 1800s after the Great Chicago Fire and became one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the country. I'm excited to stay at the Hotel Burnham, itself an historic landmark. But unlike the summer of 2003, I might for obvious reasons be opting out of the Chicago River Tour. That year, it poured buckets -- cheating me out of my photo-taking quest of the many surrounding buildings.
But first, duty calls. We look forward to bringing our readers all of the latest conference coverage daily live from the conference. Check our Website at www.advanceweb.com/pt for daily reporting and commentary on conference activities. Coverage will include:
- Daily photo galleries;
- Live conference blogs from sessions and lectures;
- Conference forum discussions.
Come find us in the exhibit hall at booth 215. We'd love to meet you in person! And don't forget to tune in from home after the conference for even more, including:
- Conference Experience videos;
- Photo galleries of your photos and conference stories/experiences;
- Interviews with representatives of APTA sections.
Hope to see you in the Windy City! As famed Chicago architect Daniel Burnham once said: "Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men's blood and probably will not themselves be realized."
