The Busy PT's Guide to Finding Balance

Finding Balance at Home and in the Workplace

Published November 13, 2007 4:00 PM by Janey Goude

Take a deep breath.  Go ahead, no one's watching.  Take a deep breath.  Just like you tell your patients:  slowly in through your nose, then slowly out through your mouth.  All the way out, until you feel your shoulders relax.

When was the last time you did that?  If you're like me, it was probably a couple of days ago.  Some days I feel like my world is going so fast that it's easy to loose my grip.  Sometimes I get so caught up in a situation that I lose my perspective.   If I'm stressed at home, I have difficulty keeping my mind on task in the clinic.  If I've had a frustrating day at work, it's difficult not to bring that pressure home.

Balance at home.  Balance at work.  Balance between home and work.  Balance is the key to a peaceful, productive life.  As a mother of four children, I know how essential balance is.  But I also know how elusive it can be.  There are days it seems to slip through my fingers.

Here we'll discuss practical ideas to streamline our home and work lives, to take control of our time so we have time for the activities we enjoy.  And we'll explore how relationships, at home and at work, help or hinder our search for balance.  I'll share what has worked for me and I hope you'll share what works for you.

I know your time is precious and often insufficient for the tasks at hand.  I count it a privilege that you've decided to share your time with me and I want to give you a reason to return.  So here you'll find short weekly posts that you can "grab and go" put to use immediately: housework and paperwork, planning your meals and planning your days, conflict management and finance management...the possibilities are endless!

If you have an aspect of your life that's impeding balance, respond to this post and we'll start there.  If you have something to add, grab your keyboard and peck away!  I love to write and I love to talk, but it is much more fun when dialog takes place.  The more we talk, the more we learn from each other and the more balanced our lives can become.  I look forward to finding balance with you.

Jackie,

I have a number of friends who share your journey; I'm especially honored you took time to share.  Take a deep breath of that refreshing Tahoe air for me!  Next up is getting organized.  I look forward to finding balance with you...

As a single PT mom, with two kids, I was so happy to find this blog.  I need all the help I can get! One thing that really helps us all balance our lives and come together as a family is to walk the dog together every night.  We talk about the day and get some fresh Tahoe air.  It's relaxing and we all look forward to it.  I just took a deep breath and it really helps.  Breathe!  Excellent advice and I look forward to more!
