Superwoman—How Does She Do It?

Published September 16, 2008 11:52 AM by Janey Goude
This is to all the women out there who try to be superwoman.  You have a job, a family, maybe even an aging parent.  How do you juggle it all and keep your sanity?

I spoke with a 39-year-old (really!) lady who has it all.  She owns her own business, is the mother of four children (ages 14, 8, 7 and 6), delivered a surrogate baby and just two months later participated in a 100km bike ride for charity-through the mountains!

Business, family, friends and fitness!

How does she do it all?

She doesn't.

"There was a time when I was very involved in the industry, but now my activities center around my children."

Before she had children, she served as Secretary, VP, President-Elect and then President of the local chapter of her industry's national association, in addition to being co-chair for two Habitat for Humanity homes.  Today you will find her at PTA meetings and serving on the School Improvement Council and Teacher Appreciation Committee.  In her leisure time she'll have a camera or scrapbook in hand.

Without question, she's still busy, but she isn't trying to do it all.  She didn't try to be the president of the industry association and serve on the PTA.  Her activities reflect a change in her priorities.

As we spoke about last week, we all go through seasons.  What season are you in right now?  For this season, what are your priorities?  Do your activities reflect your priorities or are you trying to do it all?

Just this month I have declined two activities that would detract from my priorities.  Saying, "No," is definitely a learned skill for me.  I haven't mastered it yet, but with practice it is definitely getting easier.

When was the last time you said, "No"?

Take a few moments to consider your activities.  Can you identify one commitment that doesn't fit with your priorities?  Decide today to take action!

My Mother very wisely told me years ago that most of my life decisions would not be between good and bad, but rather between good and best. Always choose the one that best supports the path you have chosen.
