Rules of Engagement

Published May 5, 2010 11:50 AM by Janey Goude

Rules of engagement for authority figures in war:

Rule #1:

If this isn't the hill you want to die on, don't draw your sword.

Rule #2:

Once your sword is drawn, it is a fight to the death: either the death of your enemy's perceived rebellion or the death of your authority.

Rule #3

If you won a hard-fought battle, but in retrospect know you were wrong, concede the error - but not the victory.

(Imperative question to ask before proceeding to the rules: Is this the hill you want to die on? The wise warrior does not engage the enemy unless he is willing to die in the battle.)

Jason,

Good point about hollow victories.

Dean,

Old habits die hard.  Kudos to you for putting a destructuve one out to pasture!

Thanks for your comments, guys.  I really appreciate your input.

Perfect timing, Janey! I realized in a meeting today that I didn't want to die on that particular hill.

I am amazed at how many times my "dead and lifeless" body has been left upon bureaucratic hills and yet I seem to keep repeating that pattern...at least until today.

Thanks.

"Pick the hill you want to die on" was stressed when I attended nsg school.   I think it puts issues in perspective and it certainly makes me think about a situation before I continue my "charge".  Some issue are not worth the fight and if we do come out victorious it is hollow.
