The Busy PT's Guide to Finding Balance

Do Less, Accomplish More

Published December 5, 2012 12:29 PM by Janey Goude

As we enter the busiest season of year, are you desperately wishing you could add hours onto your days? I do.

Instead of politely declining an invitation, I try to fit everything in by multitasking. I skim email while I make phone calls. I work on projects while I watch TV with my family.

Unfortunately, multitasking is not all it's cracked up to be. In fact, research shows that 98 percent of those who multitask do so at the expense of productivity. By doing two or three things at once, we feel like we're getting more done. In reality, we're distracted and less effective.

So, this Christmas season, take a deep breath and tackle your tasks one at a time. Be in the moment with clients and family -- giving them your full attention. Give your paperwork and email your full attention. You'll improve the quality of your work and relationships while increasing your productivity.

How, specifically, do you multitask? Do you feel you are in the 2 percent who multitask effectively?

Ruth,

I like the way you put that. You're absolutely right, "the quality of human contact takes a hit." Love the coffee cup saying. Thanks for sharing.

Multi-tasking comes naturally for a Mom but I agree the quality of human contact takes a hit.  We have a coffee cup which says, "Love the Moment".  It's worth a try.
