A Day in the Life of a PT Student

One Year Down…

Published August 12, 2008 12:38 PM by Veronica Haywood
I have officially just completed my first full year of PT school! I have learned so much over the past year, and I am excited for the semester to come. I am even more excited that I finally get to start putting some of my new skills to use as I was just recently hired to work as a rehabilitation aide at one of the hospitals near my school! I am very excited about this new addition to my journey.

Though I currently do not know exactly where I will be placed-IP, OP, sub-acute or mixed-I can't wait to start. I am secretly hoping that I can get exposure in an IP/sub-acute mix, since that is the type of setting that I will be doing my first internship in starting in November.

I have previously been exposed to the OP setting, so I feel pretty comfortable going into my internship next summer. However, I have had very little exposure to IP and sub-acute settings, so my mind has been racing trying to figure out how my internship will be, especially since it'll be my first one.

I feel like I have been well prepared for both my upcoming job and internship, but I am still extremely nervous about both of them. I know that they will both be fine...they have no choice but to be, right? Wish me luck on my first day today!

Thank you Shauna. I hope that this blog helps you. If you have any other questions you are more than welcome to email me personally.

Working and going to school has been a little bit of a challenge. Sometimes it can be difficult managing the two, but time management is key. If I feel as though I am too over loaded, I typically request some days off. I am able to do this with my campus job and my new job is a zero assign position so I only have to come in when they are understaffed...so it all typically works out. But I will admit I am often tired and I sleep every chance I get lol.

Hi Veronica,

Thanks for creating this blog.  I will be entering my first year as a PT student in less than 2 weeks and I am so excited.  Please continue to post and share your experiences and pearls of wisdom.

P.S. How has it been working part-time and going to school?

Stay strong,

Shauna

Hi Veronica,

I just wanted to leave you a quick note and tell you how excited I was to see your bog.  I think it will be a great help to MANY therapy students.  I have posted a link to your blog on http://college.rehabcare.com.  This is the Campus Relations blog for RehabCare.  Take a look & leave a comment!  There are some interesting topics discussed regarding Therapy students, the therapy field in general, and what our company is currently doing.
