The Planetree Philosophy

Published November 11, 2008 11:12 AM by Veronica Haywood
4 MORE DAYS. I can't believe how much time has gone by! I am stacked with finals and nearly losing my mind (well, not quite).

This week I'd like to pose a question: I work for a hospital that has adopted the Planetree philosophy, and I was curious as to how many care provider facilities have switched and what do people think about it--both as an employee and patient?

Planetree is an internationally-recognized leader in patient-centered care, according to the non-profit organization's Website. The Planetree model adheres to the following beliefs:

    • That we are human beings, caring for other human beings;
    • We are all caregivers;
    • Care giving is best achieved through kindness and compassion;
    • Safe, accessible, high quality care is fundamental to patient-centered care;
    • In a holistic approach to meeting people's needs of body, mind and spirit;
    • Families, friends and loved ones are vital to the healing process;
    • Access to understandable health information can empower individuals to participate in their health;
    • The opportunity for individuals to make personal choices related to their care is essential;
    • Pphysical environments can enhance healing, health and wellbeing;
    • Illness can be a transformational experience for patients, families and caregivers.

Hi Veronica,

Thank you for putting this out there so that more people can learn about Planetree. As you can read in many articles every day, fortunately there is an increasing focus on the human side of health care. Strangely enough in many aspects of this 'human business' this isn't the case yet. We show the human side of long-term care through articles on our website www.basicamericancomfort.com and as a company making furniture that takes the human being as a starting point, enabling them to still feel at home away from their home.

I will keep checking your blog, thanks again for this post.

Kindest regards!

Check out my website, AskAHospitalPresident.com, Tony Chen's HospitalImpact.org; and Windbercare.com . . . I've been writing and speaking about how wonderful Planetree is for nearly 12 years.
