Student Council Begins
This Tuesday marks the first meeting of student council for the semester! I am the president of our physical therapy student council at Marquette, and I've been getting ready for this day for a few weeks now.
Each semester we organize many volunteer opportunities, including: blood drives, clothing drives, food drives, volunteers for Special Olympics, the American Lung Association's Asthma walk, etc. We also do a lot of other fun stuff too with other classmates- we organize bowling nights where students can come and get to know their other classmates, as well as "inter-class" dinners. In three weeks we are holding the annual "PT Olympics"- each class competes against the other classes to try and take the title. PT Olympics includes a theraband-launch, tug-o-war, sweatshirt swim, and many other fun activities.
Many of our classes organize fundraisers throughout the year- clothing sales and our famous "Massage-a-thon" are very popular in the PT department and throughout the university. Student council keeps a tab on all of these different events to make sure they are kosher with the university's policies.
Student Council also organizes BBLs (Brown Bag Lunches), where we invite speakers to come and teach us something PT related over the lunch hour. Students can then bring their lunch and enjoy learning something extra that they are interested about.
Finally, we have an APTA liaison (one of our students) who keeps student council up to date with all the APTA news. She does a great job of making the APTA relevant to students and letting us know ways we can be involved with the professional organization. Our two MU Challenge representatives also attend student council meetings to announce updates to the Challenge or any fundraisers during the semester they have going on. Click here for more information on the Challenge.
I'm very excited for the new semester of student council to begin. We always have fun at our meetings and love chatting about everything that goes on during the semester. Any other students out there participate in student council? What kind of volunteering/fundraisers are you involved in?
