How to Find Cute, Functional Nursing Shoes

Published 27 September 16 12:57 PM

If you’re a nurse, or a healthcare professional, chances are you’re on your feet four or five days a week, for eight or more hours a day. All of that standing, walking or running (think patient who needs your assistance for a medical emergency right away) can take a definite toll on your soles. When you’re constantly on the move, it’s critical to find footwear that helps you glide effortlessly throughout your shift with support and comfort. But for the fashion savvy nurses out there, form is just as important as functionality.

Brands Doing It Best

This is why tons of health-conscious shoe brands, such as Klogs and Dansko, are steeping in the direction of trend-setting fashion without sacrificing comfort. Let’s take a look at a few of the big name brands making the change, as well as some tips on how to buy comfy and fashion-forward nurse shoes.

Dansko – This PA-based company gives hard-working feet the stability and support they deserve. Their colorful clogs come in a large variety of colors, textures, and hues including black leather, reptile, cobalt, and mocha. If clogs aren’t your thing, Dansko also makes a wide range of stylish sneakers.

Klogs - A longtime favorite for their fashion and function, they offer a long line of polyurethane and leather clog in a variety of styles and colors.

Akesso – These shoes comfort for those who are on their feet all day, as well as safety for those where slips, trips, spills. And falls can occur. Akesso recently designed two new lines -- the Helia and Carraria - both of which have the look and feel of a casual athletic shoe with the added durability and safety of traditional healthcare footwear.

Timberland – Designed to meet nurses’ needs, Timberland shoes feature an exclusive Anti-Fatigue technology created for healthcare professionals who spend long hours on their feet.

Finding the Right Shoes for Your Needs

When it comes to which shoe fits the best, it’s about the perfect style, size, and support. Here are some tips to find the ultimate nursing shoes for your needs:

Measure Your Feet. Even as adults, our feet can change in size. Even if the change is slight, it can make a big difference when it comes to the shoe fitting properly. Consider your own feet when on the search for a comfortable shoe. Everyone’s are different, so the shoes your friend wears may not be the “right fit” for you.

Measure Both Feet. Everyone has a slight size difference when it comes to their feet. Ensure you shop for the larger foot.

Measure Your Feet Standing and at the End of Your Shift. If you do this, you can take swelling into account.

Mind Your Arches. A lot of folks have differing lengths and heights in their arches. This will make a huge difference in the fit of your shoe and why some brands are perfect for some and not others.

They Don’t Have to Be Broken In. Seriously. If the shoes are snug, don’t make the mistake in thinking they need to be broken in. Good shoes will fit properly when you buy them.

Consider Running Shoes. Dansko, as we stated before, as some fabulously fashionable sneaks that cater to runners and healthcare professionals.

Consider Your Style. Do you like floral prints or are you a wild child and prefer reptile? Find a shoe design that caters to your unique style preferences. Trust us when we say there are hundreds of cute shoes to choose from!

Functionality. This is key when it comes to maximum mobility. Find a light-weight shoe that won’t slow you down. Since you’re constantly switching gears, this is critical.

Ask Yourself the Following Questions:

o   What type of foot-bed best contours to your foot shape?

o   Does the insole have enough cushion for your heel?

o   Do you have any special foot conditions you need to take into consideration?

o   Do you have flat arches, wide feet, or plantar fasciitis? Each of these factors will determine what you think is comfortable.

Take time to take care of your feet while putting your best fashion foot forward in functional and stylish shoes. Remember, without healthy feet, you don’t have a leg to stand on.
