Fun Summer Reads for Little Kids

Published June 3, 2014 9:14 AM by Stephanie Bruno-Dowling
June is here and the school year is almost over! Just two weeks left! Here in Delaware County, Pa., we have a 3 week break coming up and then the summer school program begins after July 4th. We are now officially gearing up for our summer curriculum and some fun summer literature is just what we need to create dynamic language enriched lessons! When designing your lessons, try to incorporate summer activities, such as water play, sidewalk chalk, picnics and walks outside to accompany the books listed below. Enjoy and have fun! Happy Summer!
  • The Night Before Summer Vacation written by Natasha Wing and illustrated by Julie Durrell
    • Appropriate for children in preschool, ages 3 and up
    • Summary from Amazon: "A little girl and her family are getting ready to go on vacation . . . or at least they are trying to. In the effort to pack everything that will be needed, there's bound to be something overlooked, and what that is provides a funny ending to this meter-perfect ‘twist' on Clement Moore's classic."
    • Earned 4 and ½ stars on Amazon
  • Summer (Four Seasons) written by Nuria Roca
    • Appropriate for children in preschool, ages 3 and up
    • Summary from Amazon: "Large and beautiful color illustrations on every page of this book - one in a brand-new four-volume series - will appeal especially to early grades boys and girls. Kids will also love having the simply written descriptive text read to them as they gaze at the charming pictures-and as they get just a little older, they'll be able to read the text by themselves! Both words and pictures evoke the moods and activities of summer and the illustrations show children at seasonal play."
    • Earned 5 stars on Amazon
  • Beach Bugs: A Sunny Pop-up Book written by David A. Carter (Author, Illustrator)
    • Appropriate for children in preschool, ages 3 and up
    • Summary from Amazon: "From picnic bugs and fireflies to rollercoaster bugs on a warm summer night, this next installment of the wildly popular Bugs series captures what everyone loves about summer! The book has cardstock pages and includes pop-ups, flaps, and lights!"
    • Earned 4 and ½ stars on Amazon
  • Because Your Mommy Loves You written by Andrew Clements and illustrated by R. W. Alley
    • Appropriate for children in preschool, ages 3 and up
    • Summary from Amazon: "When a little boy and his mom go camping, mini-disasters abound, and there are lots of opportunities for Mom to step in and fix everything. But instead, with a loving touch, this mommy shows her child ways to do things for himself, going far to encourage her child's independence. And there is still plenty of opportunity for snuggling under the stars. This warm and humorous testament to all the loving things a supportive mom does each day is every bit as heartwarming as its predecessor and is sure to become a favorite for families everywhere."
    • Earned 4 and ½ stars on Amazon

Love these books. Might have to purchase a few and read to my two young signs. Thanks for sharing.
