Autism Spectrum Across Ages and Environments

Welcome to ASAAE!

Published January 27, 2011 2:43 PM by Kathie Harrington

Welcome to Autism Spectrum Across Ages and Environments, the newest ADVANCE for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists blog.

My background in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is extensive. I am an international speaker, author, and mother of a grown son with autism. [For more biographical information on Kathie Harrington, visit the About Blog and Author page]

Autism Spectrum Across Ages and Environments will focus on language, behavior, social skills, family, employment, leisure skills, in other words, anything dealing with ASD. As the title implies, this blog will encompass all ages and cross environments, as autism knows no boundaries.

Written primarily for speech-language pathologists, it is my desire that the information and inspiration presented in this blog be shared with other professionals and parents. I feel that learning is wonderful but to share that learning is a true gift. That's what this blog is all about. We all learn from each other and this is an opportunity to share concerns and solutions about ASD.

I am widely known for my "Ten Laws of Success for Children with Autism." These ten laws have been written about, lectured on, and strategized for both children and adults who fall into the autism spectrum. In several blogs to follow, I will examine each of the following laws, one at a time, give strategies, stories, and how each law can be applied to children and adults you might know. Comments and questions are always welcome.

Ten Laws of Success for Children/Adults with Autism

1.  Autism is a reason, never an excuse.

2.  Success builds success.

3.  "Nobody ever rose to a low expectation." Carl Boyd

4.  Fear is not an option

5.  Small steps grow into giant leaps.

6.  Interaction across and within environments is essential.

7.  Visual learners need to see.

8.  Blended therapies mix well.

9.  "Laughter is no detriment to learning." Walt Disney

10.  The top line is independence.

In next week's blog I will explain why "Autism is a reason, never an excuse." This will definitely be a time when you'll want to share with parents and other professionals who love and work with children and adults with autism.

I agree, Carol Gray's work and Michelle Garcia Winner's work are both great resources.

Kathie, I just found your blog and am looking forward to following.

Hi Lisa, from Little Egg Harbor, NJ ~ love the name of your town. Cute name or not, every town has children with ASD, and every child with ASD has social language deficits. There are many programs out there that address social skills for our high functioning kiddos, but in my opinion, only two really get to the core of the social aspect and I plan to do blogs on these in the future, but I'll give you some thoughts here to investigate. Look up Carol Gray's material on Social Stories and my number ONE, Michelle Garcia Winner's Social Thinking materials. There is one reason these shine above others ~ they address "thinking about what others think" as opposed to just addressing the behavior of the person with ASD. Remember, however, it all takes time, time, time, and patience, patience, patience. "See" you next Thursday.

Do you have any recommendations for materials/programs for social skills groups?  I work with grade 3, 4, 5 students who are higher level functioning autistic individuals that need to address social skills.

Great blog, Kathie.  In my book, Life with McDuff:  Life Lessons Learned from a Therapy Dog, I write about the positive influences of animal assisted therapy and reading programs that I witnessed on my journey with McDuff.  Therapy dogs are working with the autistic with fantastic results.

Keep up the good work!

I am happy to see your blog, Kathie.  You have always been a great advocate for all persons with autism and I learned so much from you.  I look forward to reading your blog.
