I'm a Little Firecracker

Published June 30, 2011 9:00 AM by Kathie Harrington

I'm a little firecracker

sometimes waiting to explode.

You never know when those times come

bet you wish you had my code.

I light up like a sparkler

when things don't go my way.

I throw myself down to the ground

until I feel okay.

When I see spinning flowers,

round and round I go.

I make myself so dizzy.

I put on quite the show.

Smoke can often emerge from me

like it's coming out my ears.

Sometimes when those things happen

I rule my own inner fears.

The displays I show to express myself,

they're not always what they seem.

I just don't understand life,

that is why I need you on my team.

I need to have you teach me

to take turns with all the rest.

I want to imitate your style.

I try to do my best.

I want to know the difference

between laughter and a tear.

I beg to feel them in my heart

every time my mommy's near.

I want to live as you do,

to look up in the sky

to not be afraid of fireworks

and enjoy their beauty way up high.

For now, I am that firecracker

imprisoned in its shell.

Please ignite my beauty

I can't wait to live so well.

I wrote this Fourth of July poem for you, the SLP, because I know that all of the children with whom we work, especially those with ASD, appreciate everything we do to teach them. Written in the voice of a child with ASD, he/she is that firecracker waiting for you help ignite their beauty.

Children with ASD take extra work. They take more time. They don't always respond. We often measure their success in inches. They may scratch or hurt us. However, we know they are sparklers that will burst into a fountain of colorful displays and last a lifetime.

Yes, kids with ASD are firecrackers. They pull our strings, push our buttons and light our fires. We teach them and they teach us. We call that life.

Share this poem with other SLP's, professionals, and especially with parents.

Happy Independence Day

The poem depicts the world through the eyes of an ASD child which gives one a different prespective of interacting and viewing those identified with ASD.
