Autism at ASHA

ASHA Convention

I'm going the 2011 ASHA Convention in San Diego -- are you? I have special little gifts for the first few SLPs who introduce themselves to me in S.D. Of course, you have say, "I read your ADVANCE Autism Spectrum Blog."

Autism Spectrum Disorders Courses offered at ASHA 2011

  • Theoretical models of autism spectrum disorders
  • Early screening for autism spectrum disorders
  • Prevalence of autism spectrum disorders
  • Developmental characteristics and trajectories of children with autism spectrum disorders
  • Sensory processing issues in autism spectrum disorders
  • Cognitive processing in autism spectrum disorders
  • Social-communicative partners of individuals with autism spectrum disorders
  • Impact of autism on family members
  • Identification and assessment of autism spectrum disorders
  • Treatment of autism spectrum disorders in children and adults
  • Efficacy of assessment and treatment of autism spectrum disorders
  • Outcomes research in autism spectrum disorders
  • Multicultural/cross linguistic issues specifically related to autism spectrum disorders
  • Etiologies of autism spectrum disorders and the association between ASD and related conditions
  • Broader autism phenotype
  • Neurobiology of autism spectrum disorders
  • Administrative and regulatory issues related to autism spectrum disorders
  • Personnel preparation issues specific to serving individuals with ASD
  • Consumer issues related to autism spectrum disorders

The entire selection above are listed under the autism spectrum; however, I'm certain that many of the sessions offered under augmentative and alternative communication, language and learning in school-age children and adolescents, and language disorders in adults present information that pertains to the autistic population as well. Look for yourself on the ASHA Convention Topic Page.

San Diego and Coronado Island

Our family has vacationed in San Diego and on Coronado Island many times because we live in Las Vegas, only six hours away. I highly recommend taking the ferry over to Coronado, the trolley tour of San Diego, the Gaslight District, the zoo, Legoland is popular (although I've never been there), Balboa Park, and most certainly, the Pacific Ocean. My personal favorite is The Dell Coronado on Coronado Island.

I created this collage just for you to get a glimpse of ASHA 2011.

See you there and always remember,
