Expanding Communication Skills? There's an App for That!

Published January 25, 2012 9:30 AM by Angela Desideri

What better way to get children excited to learn language and communication skills than a birthday party? Toca Boca's "Birthday Party" is an interactive app that provides numerous opportunities to help speech-language pathologists expand language use and teach social skills, as well as AAC skills, in a fun and motivating way.

Here' s how it works:

  1. Select a birthday cake design from the following choices: Panda, Dragon or Rainbow.
  2. Select the plates/dishes from the three choices provided.
  3. Select one of three presents.
  4. Sing "Happy Birthday" and blow out the candles (by touching them).
  5. Time for the birthday party celebration! Eat the cake, pop the confetti, pour the juice, put the cake on the plates, eat the cake, open the present, and drink the juice.
  6. Once all of the cake is eaten it's time to clean up and wash the cups and dishes.
  7. The birthday party is over!

Here's how I use it in therapy:

  1. Requesting items such as the type of cake, blow out candles, eat cake, pour juice, drink juice, open present, pop confetti, wash dishes, and wash cups by using signs, PECS, AAC systems or visual supports.
  2. To practice labeling items.
  3. To practice stating preferences: "I like______."
  4. To review and practice using core words like eat, drink, more, look, like and open.
  5. To teach social language skills related to birthday parties.
  6. To review the schedule of a birthday party.
  7. To practice expected vs. unexpected behaviors at a party.
  8. To work on asking questions such as "Do you want cake?" "Do you want juice?" "Which juice do you want?" and much more.
  9. To practice social skills related to birthday parties.
  10. To work on turn-taking skills.

It is very generous of you to share your experience and lesson plans.  This is new territory for me...and your posts have demystified and organized the information for me.  I am very grateful.

Leslye - I completely agree with you!  One of my favorite features about their apps is all of the repetitions you can get!  I can't wait for Toca Boca's new app to be released.

Jessica - Thanks for your feedback.  I'm working on a blog post that includes Android apps.

I'd like to see some info on Android educational apps if possible as well. Lots of parents are Android users, and it helps to have some suggestions for them too.

I LOVE the Toca Boca APPS.  My preschool and K students especially are so motivated to practice language - sequencing, describing, verb tenses, carryover articulation skills...endless opportunities.  Kids really WORK them!
