Wonkidos Step-by-Step Game--Ordering at a Restaurant

Published August 8, 2012 10:38 AM by Jeremy Legaspi

Wonkidos is a series of apps that focus on step-by-step social skills and is developed by Brighter Futures for Beautiful Minds (BFBM). BFBM is a section of a non-profit that creates mobile applications, software and videos for the developing child using mobile technology and the internet.

These social skills apps appear to be geared to children with higher functioning autism or children that struggle with basic social skills. The apps revolve around a main character and four tiny robotic characters that guide the main character in making the right decisions. The app works by having the child watch a five minute video of the desired social skill and then interacting in game where they have to answer multiple choice questions and sequence the skill.  You can check out an example of this in action here:

Overall, the animation throughout the app is of high quality and the robotic characters keep the child engaged while watching the video. I can see a parent using this in the car on the way to the restaurant to help their child remember the appropriate skills to use when ordering their meal. I do wish they added at least one more game to the app, perhaps a game practicing ordering food or something along those lines, because after the child is done watching the video and answering the questions they're done using the app.

Wonkidos Step-by-Step Game Ordering at a Restaurant- Available for iPad and iPhone in the App Store for $3.99.  You can also directly download each episode to your computer or mobile device through their website for $5.99 each.
