Sort This Out Pack

Published February 7, 2013 12:35 PM by Jeremy Legaspi

Looking for an app to add a little pizzazz to your approach on teaching sorting and categorization?

Well, Sort This Out Pack is an entertaining app that does just that. It makes learning categories fun using a train theme. The game is broken up into four themed stations which are labeled: city, theme park, beach, and zoo.

The train is has two cars on it each with four spots to place items in the category. A truck drops off the "cargo," which are pictures of the items that need to be sorted out. You have the ability to choose from the following category symbol sets : plants, toys, bedroom, music, body parts, weather, drinks, sports, school, ocean, cleaning, shapes, house, insects, animals, clothes, tools, bathroom, kitchen, transport, vegetables and fruit. Each category has 12 colored Widgit symbols in it so with each stop through a particular station, the items will change.

The neat part is you have the ability to add your own categories so you don't necessarily have to target categories; you can make phonemic awareness activities or groups of pictures to target phonology. It's up to you how creative you want to be!

When creating a category, you have an option to record audio for the picture; and when playing, you can have it display image only, text only, or both image and text.

In the examples below I show the app using categories that I created.
