Organizing a Sleep Conference

Published September 1, 2011 1:36 PM by Amy Reavis

I am not a super organized person. I am more an idea person. When I was asked to work with the Florida Association of Sleep Techs (FAST) I thought, "What a great idea!" What I did not plan on was trying to put together a conference. If you are great at administration, then it would be easier for you than someone like me, who loves to teach but thinks to-do lists are torture.

So here I am helping to get the first conference together. I'm attempting to help with locations, speakers and the all-important getting people to show up. I am lucky that Brian Merritt, my fellow board member, is a whiz at organization -- but I am totally stressed out. I worry about everything -- and especially if those who do attend will find all the speakers we are lining up interesting and the the topics useful. And will people see the future of FAST as being essential, as I do?

I hope that everyone is patient with me and I hope some of you come to visit us in Orlando and attend this conference because this is my first effort... and I worry (call it the Jewish Mother in me). I believe that education and continuing education are what is going to make our field of sleep the strong growing profession we want. I also believe that the leaders in the community are stepping up in force. It makes me proud to be a sleep tech.

The event will be Saturday, Oct. 15, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Valencia Community College, Orlando, Fla. For more information call 407-517-8129 or visit www.flsleep.org
