Home Sleep Testing

Published August 15, 2013 10:31 AM by Penny Mehaffey

I wanted to pick your collective brains about home sleep testing. Our lab is recently accredited for OOCT testing. The jury is still out for me on some issues. I like the convenience it affords patients, but I don't like being mandated to go that route.

Typically we request the patient return the device the next day after testing. This is becoming problematic since we have a significant out-of-state patient population. We are setting up a system to allow the patient to return the device via courier.  I worry that we won't get them back though. It's probably silly too, since I currently have two devices that have been out for 2 weeks due to patient transportation issues.

What are you guys doing? I know there are companies who do mail order only and they never see the patient, so it must work well for them. Anyway, I would love some feedback, to know what others are doing and what's working, as well as what's not.

We are hospital based. We don't have too much trouble with that, however we advised a patient whom had the device for a week (years ago) that we would be forced to send the police and we got the device back quickly.
