Should physicians be assigning their own codes

I had an interesting call with a Physician Office the other day.  I called to see what specific Code (evaluation and management (E/M), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and International Classification of Diseases (ICD)) they use for a procedure their physician conducts to help out our Acute base physician practice.   The response from the office was "we do not have a Coder, the physician enters his own codes."

What is your thoughts on this type of action.  It is becoming more and more prominent in smaller physician practices. Should physicians be assigning their own codes? Should this be left up to coding experts?

    Thank you in advance, Paula
