So often in high pressure health care settings, everyone feels that their piece of the patient's care is more important than someone elses. ED blames lab for the hemolyzed samples (we do it on purpose, you know) and lab blames nursing for lousy drawing techniques, etc. I found this in most facilities that I have been at. At the current facility, we are making great strides in cooperation. First off, is there a mechanism that allows you to thank or commend a coworker in another department? Can you find the positive things about the other work area? Secondly, can you make opportunities to shadow each others department to see what the other health care providers have to do and what they face? Next time you buy donuts or pizza for your staff, why not buy it for another unit or ancillary service to thank them for the work that they do? Everyone wants and needs to be appreciated. I have found that if you treat other health care professionals, like professionals, and thank them once in a while, they are much more likely to cooperate with the lab. Also, if you can show statistics for why we cannot accept hemolyzed samples (just an example), they may understand better. Hope this helps.
