    Mammo Jobs in the South

Hi all. This is the first time posting to this forum, and I am beyond frustrated right now. I have lived here for almost 2 years, and have applied to every Mammo/Rad Tech positon available to me. There are 4 or 5 facilities near my home and not one has replied to my application. I am originallly from New England, and have 30 yrs experience in Radiography, 20 of which are in Mammo. Can anyone tell me why I am not hearing from rthese facilities? Is it a matter of not what you know, but who you know? Any input would be greatly apreciated, because I am at the end of ny rope right now.

The problem is that the field has become saturated with graduated students and they are being hired instead of the experience Tech. because they start out with a much lower salary. I see in my area that the student's cannot find jobs, go and volunteer in the raadiology department to get experience until they can find a job and they get end up getting hired without benefits and a much lower salary and the experience Tech. is let go after the graduate prove her or himself on the job.

    Hi,

Loni is right. The markets all saturated now in many modalities.

Are you able to move? This would greatly increase your chances of getting a job.

Re: Mammo Jobs in the South

Thanks for your replies. I moved here 2 years ago from the Northeast, so moving again is not an option. I am traveling right now, and while I enjoy it immensely, I would like to be employed in the city where I live. I just don't know why I can't get a job. Is it because of internal hiring? Or, as Lori said, are they hiring their students at a much lower rate of pay than I would (and should) require?  I have been a tech for 30 years, 20 in Mammography.  You would *think* employers would take that into consideration---I am already "trained" and could hit the floor running, so to speak. I do that now as a traveler anyway. It's just so frustrating!!

Here is an update on my employment situation. I have applied for 3 positions in my city since the last time I posted here in June. Not ONE reply. NOT ONE. I continue to travel, but it is getting old. My current assignment has been cut in half-from 13 weeks to 6. I go home in 2 weeks. I don't know what else to do.

I really don't understand this field right now.....Here you are a veteran of radiology with years of mammo experience and you can't find a job because they are hiring younger techs so they can pay them less yet here I am less than a year out of school and can't find a job because I have no experience. Who are these employers hiring?!?! Does anyone have a clue??

Re: Mammo Jobs in the South

I feel they are hiring students that have done their clinical training at their facilities. It is ridiculous. Especially in this job climate. I won't take a position that starts me at a new tech pay scale. I have been offered $8.00/hr. No lie. As a mammo tech. Minimum wage is what....$6.55/hr as of July, 2008. I am so ready to chuck it all.
