Does anyone know if a LPN in the state of Maryland needs to be certified to draw blood? There was an issue at work when a LPN asked a RN to help with drawing blood for labs and the RN responded with, "I am not certified to draw blood." I know one must be IV certified to start IV's, but blood draws?  Any information would be appreciated.

I know that in PA you don't...I'm a phlebotomist in nursing school and the hospital I previously worked for was training housekeeping staff to be phlebotomists. 

I work in a community hospital mostly with Pediatrics and I at times do start IV's and draw blood

On the 11 - 7 shift the nurses have to draw the blood if blood work is ordered on that shift
