How do you feel about CEUs?

I wanted to ask everyone if you are required to compleete a certain number of CEU's(continuing education credits) before you can renew your license, and if so, how many do you have to do?? And...Do you think this is a good idea?? (there was a recent poll in a nursing magazine about this and  the answer was overwhelmingly yes)...I'd like to know. In the state of Pennsylvania, there is no such requirement and we renew our licenses every two years.

    Thanks all!!

    Re: CUE'S...

In Florida, we are required to maintain 24-30 ceu's minimum, and BLS every two years to renew and maintain our active status.  I believe that it doesn't include items like IV or Phleb, though.

The Board of Nursing sent out statements informing nurses of changes in CEU ( ie: CEU broker), accumulation requirements and notification procedures.  Please see the link below.  http://www.doh.state.fl.us/mqa/nursing/nur_updates.html

I enjoy doing CEU's because they off the opportunity to expand one's knowledge in the content provided.  It surprises me that other states don't have similar requirements.

It isn't what I say, but what I do that should matter!

    ceu

i'm licensed in three states,,,only state that requires CEU is FL for me, GA and NC doesnt, makes no sense...I had one nurse say ' those are a pain in the a--. I'm glad we dont need them' that was in GA...how do you stay abreast of new and changing things if you dont continue to read, learn and grow.....medical is constantly changing and we need to stay on top of it...

    RE:ceu

I'm an LPN from New Jersey and our state does not require CEU's to renew licenses. I used to think that this was OK until I started taking CEU's from 'Advanced for LPN's' for my own information. I really liked that you could pay one price and take all the courses that you want. In any case, it opened my eyes to the fact that this would benefit all  nurses. So many things change so quickly in this field that it can be very difficult to keep up. Learning is life long.

    CEU's

I received my practical nurse lincense in the state of MI and we are required to have 25 ceu's every 2years when we renew our license. I move to North Carolina in 2003 and there were no requirements for ceu's at that time . But this past year starting in 2008 we will be required to 30ceu's. I think that having to get ceu's is good . It keep you curent and up to date with new medcations ,new tx for disease processes. It also helps to deliver betterand more efficeiant care to our patients, because the medical field is for everchanging.so I'm all for it . Since also keep my practical nursing license current in MI.

    CEU's

In New York its not required to re-new your license. Some hospitals I have worked in made it mandatory in order to maintain employment. Interestingly EMT's are required to do cme's but nurses aren't. I do them anyway cause I like to keep updated, also You never know if you might need them.

RE:How do you feel about CEUs?

I have been a LPN for over 10 years and have never had to submit information about CEUs in order to renew my license. I have taken free courses to obtain CEUs when offered by employers. But I never have paid for CEU's.

RE:How do you feel about CEUs?

I strongly feel that it be a part of your Nursing career to keep up with what isa happening out there.

My state does not require CEUs yet that I know of for LPNs excepting a Blood Pathogen study within four years of license renewal.

I have always gone to  programs while I was an active LPN, for that was usually the only way that one could be familiar with what was going on in the ever changing world of Nursing.

Also another  way is to subscribe to a Nursing journal of some type.

This is just common sense to me.

    Hi Klyttle,

I think we are required to get CEU's now. We need 30-35 before you renew your next time. I received from The Institue for Nursing newsletter and it stated in there that the laws have changed.. So you may want to check.  I don't really work in the nursing field anylonger but I want to keep my license. I need to get busy and get some CEU's!  Just wanted to let you know.

    Re: RE:ceu

I'm also an LPN in New Jersey and effective with renewal of 2008, one is reguired to have 30 ceus in order to maintain one's license. I've found that sometimes I'm just taking a test in order to get the ceus and not really retaining the information I've read.  One good thing, the job I'm at now, I'm able to go on the computer during "down" time and earn some extra ceus.

    Re: RE:ceu

    Hello,

I am also an LPN in the state of NJ as well as PA. I work in the health insurance industry and do obtain some ceu's offered related to my job. However. the LPN Advanced web site does not confirm if they are a ANCC provider. Does any one know if they are? I did send an e mail to the person that handles the ceu on line questions and currently waiting for a response.

Does any one have any suggestions on where to get CEU for NJ ? I am hoping to just go on line with LPN Advance and sign up to take several courses . This CEU's is not getting easy to find

    Thanks

Re: How do you feel about CEUs?

I am licensed in PA and NJ . CEU'S . I think its good and bad. If you are currently practicing ( direct pt care) CEU's are a good idea. If you work in an office setting etc CEU's i do not think should be a requirment but optional. CEUs are becoming harder to obtain ,

do to lack of resources in area and approved providers by the state

    Re: RE:ceu

you may need to check your references because as of last year in nj nurses are required by the board of nursing to have at least 30 ceu's for each license renewal.i hope you see this before YOU go to renew!!!

    Re: RE:ceu

I.m also an LPN in New Jersey and they now require CEU's. I get Advanced Magazine and Nursing. I read the articles so this keep me up to date so I don't think we should have to required to take them to renew my licenses.
