    Re: Coding and Billing!

In another discussion, the topic was on getting your foot in the door for a coding position soon after graduation.  A coder recommended start out in billing to get your foot in the door then work yourself up the ladder to a coding position.

i believe that its berret to know coding side and billing side of healthcare because knowledge of one can make one profiecient in the other.

    Re: Coding and Billing!

    Hi Shanette,

This post will be a tad bit biased, as I am currently a medical records and have been for the past 15 years.  I initially started out as a biller, but shortly transitioned.  I find that there are more career opportunities out there as a coder, along with better pay, and leadership positions.  There is more of a corporate structure that allows you to be promoted through the ranks.  I found there were more professionally rewarding aspects of the career such as interacting with nurses and physicians, reading medical charts and learning about the disease process and treatments, and more CEUs/education and conferences to attend.

    Good luck, Anthony

I think knowing both coding and billing would get you hired before someone that just does one or the other.

    Re: Coding and Billing!

It would be better if you be a coder and a biller because it gives you more knowledge and helps you in the workplace
