IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL LPNS:

LPNs have earned the right and deserve to have their voices heard! LPNs are essential to the medical profession. LPNs have got to have their interests protected by having representation, when nursing organizations...legislators...the government...and health agencies are all making decisions that affect the LPN profession and future!!!

This is where the National Federation of LPNs comes in! The NFLPN watches your back! Everyone wants change, but are any of you members? The NFLPN cannot support and protect LPNs without members!

It is soooo important for LPNs to stand up and be counted! LPNs deal with discrimination daily and we do complain about this....but only to each other, and on bullentin boards like this! Very , very few of stand up and do something about it! That has to change!!!

The NFLPN provides leadership, representation and guidance to our members. IF you want respect, and to be treated fairly...do something about it!

Join the NFLPN - There are approximately 1.2 MILLION LPNs in this country....Just imagine the changes we could make by standing united and making certain your opinions are voiced loud and clear to the appropriate people!!

LPNs RULE!

Call me at 1-800-691-7915 and join the effort! Let's quit complaining and do something about it!!!!

Thanks, Melanie from the NFLPN

LPN Refresher Courses

I have been out of the job market for a long time....19 years. Would like to get back in. Any suggestions? Does anybody know of a LPN refresher course out there. I have been looking but not having much luck.

DISRESPECT OF L.P.N.'S

I am a 27 year seasoned, PROUD L.P.N.! I do not understand why we are so disrespected by our sister R.N.'S, medical institutions and the medical field in general. The general public do not consider us a valid nurse because we are not R.N'S. The public does not seem to understand there is virtually no difference between L.P.N.'S and a two year R.N. in the state of Massachusetts. The public is uneducated that we L.P.N'S are educated, licensed nurses. I would go to to toe with any R.N. as I know that I am a competent nurse. In Massachusetts one is not considered a Professional Nurse unless one has a BSN so even two year R.N'S are not considered professional but because they are an R.N. and belong to the same organization as doctors they are okay? I did not know intelligence is determined by initials after your name? Would I be any smarter than I am if I had R.N. after my name I do not think so. I work with R,N.'S who say you think like an R.N. what does that mean? I think like a nurse because that is what I am. L.P.N.'S are trained as bedside nurses and in my state we have more practicum hours than R.N.'S some R.N. programs do not have any practicum which I cannot even fathom how can you care for someone expand your knowledge base with no practicum? But you have R.N. after your name so it is all good right? We have constitutional rights we are not suppose to profile, be judged by the color of our skin or what religion we subscribe to we are not suppose to be openly discriminated against or our civil rights be infringed upon. So why are L.P.N.'S openly discriminated against and told without logical thinking we need an R.N. for this job? I would so join a lobbyist group to gain respect and recognition for L.P.N.'S we have not been validated for long enough we need to start a national register with signatures from all L.P.N.'S bring it to the attention of our local state houses and let government, people and yes the medical community know we are here will always be here and work just as hard as any R.N. Are the other nurse's licenses at risk because we know she's doing this? During my second semester, I felt that maybe nursing wasn't for me and dropped. I ended up with a degree in speech pathology. However, nursing was always there in the back of my mind plus I love working with people and trying to promote better health matters. My issue now is that I am currently a special education teacher and I would like to get back into my first career love: nursing. I was thinking that maybe I should get my CNA license and try to apply for LPN school. I just got married and I do not want to mess up any financial situation. How should I get back into the nursing field? Any advice is welcomed. Thank you!
Will Any Employer Pay For LPN Education?

I know their are places that pay for continuing education, and LPN to RN. Does it exist for a job or school instituition, with the nursing shortage to pay for LPN schooling, if employment is promised? I live in South Jersey, I don't know if that exists in this area. I'm currently in a program, but their all full-time, and I still have two little kids that depend on me. They don't go to school full-time yet, so I thought I could work part-time, and work towards my degree on the job and through on-line courses too. I'm getting discouraged, because everyone tells me to thow my kids in day-care and go to a LPN vocational for 1 year full-time. My kids still get sick often, and then their is the issue of carpooling, and before and after care. Any advice, I need the money, and don't have a supportive spouse.
Meth addiction is a problem that has spread
to all areas of the United
  States. During 1999 4.3% (9.4 million
people) of the U.S.
population reported trying meth at least once in their lifetime. The highest
rate of meth use was among adults ages 18-25. Although meth use is an epidemic
across the United States,
nowhere is it a bigger problem that in the Midwest.
Meth accounts for nearly 90% of all drug cases in the Midwest, and is most
prevalent in Oklahoma.
Meth is surpassing cocaine as the drug of choice in Oklahoma. The state medical examiner's
office reports the number of death cases testing positive for meth have been
higher than cocaine for the past three years. The office also reports meth is
found in more and more cases of homicides, and motor vehicle accidents.

.............nova

I am new to the profession. But I love it. Has everyone heard of the new medication aides? If you have, I want to know how you feel about there job description. If you have not heard about them, you had better do some research. It seem that in order to help with the nursing shortages especially in nursing home settings, unlicensed persons are being hired and minimumly trained to give medications to our patients. Some of these training sessions for medication aides consists of only 20-40 hours to become certified. If you ask me this is very scary. Even with the intense LPN education that I have, I still sometimes check and double-check before I give a medication to a patient. Can you imagine only having 20-40 hours worth of training and still giving medications. The real catch is that the licensed nurse over that unlicensed person is still responsible for that persons actions. If you ask me, this is why we spent so many hours studying ourselves to death to get our license. I don't want some unlicensed person coming to give my medications to my patients. How do you feel?

Can LPN's specialize?

I'm a stay at home mom, who has decided to return to school a few years ago. I always wanted to be a nurse. I started nursing school orginally- when I started college all those years ago. Although I wanted to go the RN route, do to the time and financial issues, the LPN path seems to be the best for me right now. I know there is alot of stigma's and lack of job oppurtunities in the field. This magazine gives me a new found respect and hope for the future! I want to make as much money as possible, can I specialize-without being an RN? I just got my CNA certification, but I know their is not much money to be made in this field. I don't know if any Hospital's in South Jersey train you on the job. Can LPN's take xta cources for more certifications? Thank you-
