I had one patient all to myself the whole night for 12 hours x4 NOCs. Everything was fine while a charitable organization supplemented the hours I billed. I was in the process of getting set up to do business with Medi-Cal, which took me a whole year to complete, just to find out Medi-Cal was not responsible for paying me. After a year the charitable organization cut me off and it took me 6 months to get paid by the correct insurance Co. I was so stressed I took 2 weeks off in May, 2k9. When I returned I was informed that my services were no longer needed.

I don't think I'll ever go back to private duty nursing, at least not where Medi-Cal is concerned.

Re: private duty nursing

I love private duty as well but the family could make or break everthing. i do peds and if the family is nice then i know this is the case for me but some families are bitter and difficult so private duty is great but let me be honest that it can only be great if the family is pleasant usually the Pt. is not a problem.

Re: private duty nursing

DEAR TERI;

I have been in Nursing Homes as an administrator for about 20 years. I also am a Geriatric Care manager in Waterbury. I am trying to get back into hands on nursing however no one wants to hire me because I have had no recent hands on except as Geriatric Care Manager and I am doing assessments but that doesn't count. I have seen ads for Pediatric Private duty with extensive training. Do you think that is an option? I am open to any advise you have or any ideas you can think of. Since you are close by I thought I would email you. I hope you don't mind. GOOD AND BAD POINTS. I HAD A CASE FOR 10 YRS. IN A PRIVATE HOME. PATIENT LOVED TO GO OUT FOR RIDES, EAT IN RESTAURANTS, AND COULD BE GENEROUS IF SHE GOT HER WAY. BUT IF I SAID "NO" DUE TO BAD WEATHER, SHE WAS A REAL "PIP".I ALSO WORKED PRIVATE DUTY AT AN AREA HOSPITOL. EVERY STATE HAS DIFFERENT RULES. IN N.J. THEY MADE A DECISION THAT LPN WAS NO LONGER TO GIVE MEDS OR CHART WHICH THAT IS WHAT WE WERE DOING. PATIENTS LOVE ONE ON ONE WHERE WE ARE AT THEIR CALL FOR THEIR MEDICATIONS.NOW WITH THE PUMPS TO GIVE MEDS, IT IS VERY HARD TO DO PRIVATE DUTY IN HOSPITOL. THE STAFF NURSES REALLY TOLD THE PATIENTS WE COULD NOT DO ANYTHING SO WHY PAY US. IT DROPPED OFF. MY LADY FOR 10 YRS. PASSED WITH ME AT HER SIDE OCT. 27TH 2001.WE KNEW IT WAS COMING AND THE PATIENT HAD NO IMMEDIATE FAMILY JUST 2 STEPDAUGHTERS WHICH WANTED MONEY, NO SOUVENIORS.I TOOK IT DEEPLY HORRIBLE, AND WOULD NEVER LIKE A LONG TERM CASE LIKE THAT.GOOD LUCK THOU WITH WHAT YOU LIKE

Re: private duty nursing

Hi Julie,

I've worked private duty nursing for 4 years now. I love it. Worked in the hospital for 1 year after getting out of nursing school. too stressful. I like having one on one with my patients. And I like working with the families. The only thing is you don't get to utilize all of your nursing skills as you would in the hospitals. I don't want to lose what I've learned. Also the flexability in home health is great. If you contract your self out to companies you can work when you want. Nursing also allows you to do other things on the side.Thanks...
