smart phones vs. PDA

So I have been using a PDA with Epocrates for the past 5 years and am thinking of upgrading to a smart phone. I am looking for advice from those who use a smart phone what platform seems to work best...Blackberry, I phone, etc. Any tips from those who have used these? Pros and cons?

Finally!!!! An article written on bio-identical hormones that was well researched and well written and not biased information from the pharmaceutical companies. The article Bioidentical Hormones Examining the Debate, written by Elaine Weil NP was excellant. I have been working with bio-identical hormones in my practice for over 10 years and have had excellant results with very happy and healthy male and female outcomes.

Surgical NP reimbursement

Where can I find the guidelines for reimbursement for first assist? I've looked all over the CMS/ HHS website and can't find the specific place. I'm trying to show NPs can be very cost effective assistants, and the area just seems to hire PAs in this role!

My name is Steli Kostov and I am a family nurse practitioner- student at the University of Phoenix. I am sending this email to enquire if any nurse practitioners are available and willing to be my preceptors. I just finished Patho and Pharm and I am taking Health Assessment class. My first class with clinical rotation is Adult and Geriatric management starting in December, 2009 and continuing until May 21, 2010. I will need 90 clinical hours during that time. I currently work as RN in the emergency department of Banner Desert Medical Center. I live in Phoenix, AZ and I am willing to travel to other cities located in Arizona as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My comments on Jim Jolly's article is as follows: Nurse Practitioners as well as other providers should think about cosmesis when doing any repair of a laceration regardless of the body site. One should use the utmost skill to get best results even if in a scalp especially since many young men shave their heads as demonstrated in the photo. Jim's repair of the scalp wound did not show good approximation of the wound edges so this child will have a large scar. As seen in the photo which was to demonstate proper wound closure, the stapes did not grab the other side of the wound which would have given the wound edges a chance to heal properly. If the first staple did not approximate the wound properly, then the wound should have been carefully held as the other staples were inserted,then the first staple could be removed and properly done. Sometimes you can test the stapler first before using it on the patient in this way you can better estimate how the staple comes out of the device. The editorial staff need to be more careful in the articles they choose especially when the photographs show improper placement of the staples which will result in poor skin closure and cosmesis. I've been a PT Assistant for 14 years, have a BS in Accounting and soon to have a Nursing Degree. I'm very concerned about the idea of a blanket universal health care and want to keep the same programs and improve those already in place...which has never happened. I'm concerned as a practitioner, as a son, as a citizen of this country. I've researched it and realize that Government run health care or even a "Public Option" (which will only lead to a blanket plan) has many undesirable problems and really doesn't give people "effective" access to health care. I am asking people to mail into their senators and congressmen regarding this. I have typed up a letter for you to print, sign, and mail in to them. We must reduce this first before we waste $trillions on our system. Its not our medical system but our society weight that is the big problem!

We already have Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid! lets work within the programs we already have and make some reform there!!!

Clinical nurse specialist with prescriptive authority vs. NP

I am currently ANCC certified as a CNS in Adult MH Nursing. I am licensed in DE and PA, however, in DE I am able to practice with prescriptive authority but am unable to do so in PA because I am not board certified as an NP. I live in PA and would like to open a private practice but am really frustrated about the prescriptive authority. Any suggestions? Should I go back and get another post-graduate certificate as a psychiatric NP or maybe an adult NP? I really don't want to do that but it seems like the only option. Please help. Thanks.

I attend StonyBrook University and have to complete about 500 clinical hours of primary care (adults only) in an outpatient setting. Please let me know if there are any NPs out there. It has been so difficult to find FNPs in my area and learn from them. Please help!

Hello,

I am currently a FNP student and one of our class assignments is to interview an actively employed NP (licensed and working in the state of Texas). The questions would include such items as:

1. What does the organizational structure of the institution look like and where does the APRN fit? Who does the APRN report to and who hires and fires APRN’s?

2. What is the job description of the APN and who wrote it? (Get a copy if possible). What protocols does the APRN practice under? (Get a copy of one if possible). How often does the APRN meet with her physician collaborator to get these reviewed? What standard of care does the APRN feels fits his/her practice arena? Does the APRN delegate tasks to others?

3. Based on either CNS or NP (i.e. published NONPF Nurse Practitioner or NACNS Clinical Nurse Specialist Competencies) published competencies, compare and discuss what you observed and/or what was reported by the advanced practice nurse.

...and other questions along the same lines...

NPs as Hospitalists

Hello all,

I am a newly graduated Adult ARNP and have just started a job with a hospitalist program with 7 MDs and now 2 ARNPs. I have 12 years of experience as a nurse in CV medicine and the hospitalist will be running a Chest Pain Center and will be using me extensivly there. They are also going to utilize me for new H&P admits, post op consults, and then fu with previously seen pts on my list until discharge. I am really enjoying the new practice and they have plans to teach me how to do procedures; chest tubes, central lines, intubation, art-lines, pericentesis, etc.

I just wanted to see how others run their hospital based practice and get some opinions. I enjoyed the article in the Sept addition but wish it had some other comparisons in practice.

New NP - prescriptive authority 1800 hour preceptor requirement

I am a newly graduated FNP. Our state requires completion of 1800 hours of preceptor contact before being granted prescriptive authority. I cant sign my own prescriptions when I see patients. I am wondering how other NP's have worked around this? I am in an office with an MD seeing patients so he can co-sign my scripts in the office but what do I so when I am alone? Can he cosign scripts for me then I dispense them as needed? It is sufficient (or even legal) for him to do that? I am wondering about a carbon prescription pad with each prescription numbered so that we can keep track of the scripts?? Any advice would be helpful.
