I have had an amazing 30 year career that began with my A.S. in Radiography.

Having my A.S. enabled having a great job while raising my family and for going to school part time and finishing my B.S. degree. My only regret is that I didn't complete a graduate degree program I entered at USC. My advice? Don't stop your continuing education, ever.

Re: What have you done with your BSRS?

Karin,

Most of the techs I know who go on to earn their BS are on a mission to go into some type of imaging management.

At my hospital, we pride ourselves on 'growing leaders'. We have a Radiology Director who started out prn in one of our OP clinics 14 years ago.

We just hired a Clinical Manager for Diagnostic who was a diag tech, then CT tech who worked prn at our facility as she worked on her business degree.

Another diag/mammography tech worked her way up to Manager of our new not-quite-ready-to-open Breast Care Center.

I, myself am a graying (only my hairdress knows for sure) tech who has worked in several modalities over the years and have been working as our Radiology Process Improvement/Education Coordinator (i.e., Joint Commission!!) Coordinator for the last 6 years.

One previous CT Supervisor went on to be our Radiology Operations Manager and recently moved on up to Asst Director for one of the Emory Healthcare hospitals in Atlanta.

So, Karin, there are ways to use your hard earned degree to your advantage. Always be on the lookout for any type job that may be able to use your new skillset. A degree that started out as a personal goal may go a long way toward advancing up the ever-changing imaging career ladder. I will add that all of our promoting from within has involved technologists who have advanced certificates in at least one other modality (CT, Mammo, QM, Ultrasound). We even have one Radiology RN who is also an RT (R)(CT).

I wish you luck as your career evolves with your new degree. Your future growth is limitless!

I am ARRT RT/R and pursuing my BSRS. I still have a few more semesters yet to finish. I wonder what other technologists have done with their degree? Or was it just a personal goal; rather than a step towards a new career?
