    Magnet program advances education standards

One change initiated with the Magnet hospital program this year is a requirement that 75 percent of nurse managers at facilities applying for Magnet accreditation or reaccreditation possess a baccalaureate degree in nursing. In 2013, that requirement is scheduled to rise to 100 percent of nurse managers holding at least a baccalaureate degree.

As facilities apply for reaccreditation, Magnet assessors look closely at the organization's support for educational advancement, which in some cases has led to employer support for nurses to pursue advanced degrees. Outcomes of efforts to support education are measured and expected to advance during the next accreditation period.

The American Nurses Association advocated a 4-year degree as the sole entry to practice more than 40 years ago. That proposal never got off the ground, and meanwhile other healthcare professions continue to raise educational requirements. It boggles my mind physical therapists are required to earn a doctorate, while nursing remains stagnant. Who has more responsibility for a patient's life, a PT or a nurse?

If the Magnet program can prompt greater support for and participation in higher education, all power to that movement. There are exceptional nurses with 2-year degrees and less-than-brilliant nurses with BSNs, but that isn't the issue. The status of the nursing profession can only advance with a greater emphasis on education, especially as other healthcare specialties keep raising the bar. Nursing needs to move ahead just to keep up.

Do you agree with this change? Some think it's a backdoor way to achieve the ANA's long-held belief that all nurses should earn 4-year degrees to enter practice. What do you think?

Rich a couple of questions for you. Since you provided no credentials after your name I have to assume you are not a nurse. If you are not a nurse, you have no comments to make in a field you have not worked in. If you are a nurse why not indicate it? I have heard it all for the past 35 years and all the reasons for the BSN. I don't buy it. Education is not the issue, we don't need to raise the bar we need to set the pace. Nurses are over worked, under paid and just plain worn out. Education does not settle these issues. I have all three degress, AD, BSN and MSN. Never got a dime more for any of them, never made me a "better" nurse, and never prevented me from making any mistakes. Errors are caused by tired nurses, nurses who have not been orientated properly and emergency situations. Let's focus on the issues, patient care not sending middle aged nurses back to school so some one can say let's rasie the bar.
