    Infusing medications/solutions with blood

AABB Standards state that only normal saline is to be infused with blood. FDA allows for exceptions only if the FDA has approved the medication or solution as safe for such purposes. I have recently reviewed a policy which states that our oncology unit can infuse opioids with blood if a second line cannot be obtained, except that they cannot provide me with documentation for FDA approval. While I conduct the research on this, I was wondering if anyone else has had to deal with this dilemma.
