I have been an OT for 9 years and I'm in the process of opening a pediatric private clinic.  I went to a class in Texas titled "How to start and run a pediatric therapy practice", and the guy who ran it was an OT.  I'm not sure if he is still offering the class and he does offer it in other states.  His website is therapysemicarsllc.com  It was a great course and worth every penny.  Best wishes in your new business.

I own two pediatric private practices in the rio grande valley, texas.  I also went to that seminar on how to run a practice and found it acceptable if you never want to grow past 5 employees.  I have 51 employees and looking for more.  The main thing you need to know is your location.  What kind of people are there in your location, are they poor, affluent, on medicare or medicaid, private insurance, or private pay.  Knowing your clientele will make it easier to find the right avenue for advertising.  If there affluent then newspapers, radio, or internet is probably best, if there poor then the bargain book or free circulators is your best bet.  And if you really want to be successful stay away from productivity levels.  They dont work and they put undo stress on your employees.  If you think about it if your therapists are worried about hitting a productivity level then there focus is not on the patient 100%.  And thats the best way to fail in this business, POOR PATIENT CARE.  If you have anymore specific questions feel free to ask.  My email is cotislim1@aol.com good luck and I hope all goes well for you.

    Hi Amy,

Just curious since it's been a while since this posting how things are going for you.  Are you in practice for yourself - Congrats if you are!

I'm not sure where you are located, but we could sure use an experienced OT in and around the Los Angeles, Calif. county.  Let me know if there is an interest!

    Thanks, Stephanie Jackson

Hello Jennifer, I've tried going onto the therapysemicarsllc.com website but I don't think its a working website.

If you can send the right one, I would appreciate it! Thanks

Re: OT wanting to start her own private practice! (questions?)

I am wondering what billing code you use if you treat a child in there home.  We are a private practice and we are using outpatient codes 97003 (eval), 97110 (Ex), 97530 (DA), 97532 (cog), etc...

I have come across a home care OT visit code but everything I have read states you have to be a homecare agency to use that code????

Help anyone, I have had families ask me to come into there home and I have refused stating I am an outpatient clinic even though we are actually a private practice.

Re: OT wanting to start her own private practice! (questions?)

The first question that needs to be answered is are you registered with your state as an outpatient facility or individual provider. If you are a facility you cannot bill for home visits. Only registered home agencies can do that. If you are registered as an individual you can do what you like and bill under whatever code coincides with the treatment done i.e. 97530, 97532.
