    NBCOT Exam............

Is there any anyone studying for the OTR exam? Does anyone have any advice about the exam?  I was wondering if there are any forums for those studying for the OTR exam?

    Hi!

I took a course offered through therapy ed. Check out the following link:

     http://therapyed.com/otmain.htm

The course is a really good way to learn about how the test is formatted, types of questions, and test taking strategies (i.e. how to eliminate answers). BUT don't go expecting to be lectured to or to learn anything particularly new. The course also comes with two books which will help you study and can be a nice resource once you start working. I also studied with friends which helped alot with learning material that one of us knew more about secondary to clinical experience, research, special interest, etc. The main point stressed at the course I mentioned is not only knowing the information but being able to APPLY it. I hope this helps and good luck!

I also took the therapyed course and it was so helpful. It is really worth taking it. The books are great and they come with CDs that have practice exams on them. I also did a lot of practice questions.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the advice... I do have the book that you all are referring to you. However  it does help alot to find someone to study with or converse back and forth with. I seem to remember more and learn more that way, thats why i was inquiring if there was a forum in particular for that.

I am currently studying for the exam- I don't know of a forum but am interested in hearing from others.  I am using the Johnson book which I must admit to finding frustrating.  I actually often disagree with the clinical reasoning behind some of the correct answers- hopefully the exam won't be like that!  The questions in Johnson include OT care post hip replacement (lots of these), consultant OT role, energy conservation, sensory integration, lots of assertiveness training questions too.

    Re: NBCOT Exam............

I am scheduled to take the exam Friday 12/14. What I think is very useful for studying for the exam, is doing the practice exams. Even if you dod the ones that are provided with the NBCOT book(that CD) or if you have other OT exam review guides. Some of the test online offered by NBCOT are costly but either way this will get you in the mode of taking the test, so that you will have somewhat of an idea as to what to expect. Not so much as the type of questions but the style of questioning. You can read various chapters and try and refresh but it's hard trying to cover years of material in a matter of months so I've been using the NBCOT study guide in addition to doing the practice exams. Hope this helps. When are you schedule to take the exam?

Sorry I took so long to respond............ I havent been on line for a while. I actually took the exam the day before you. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I am really no good when it comes to big exams. I am more of a hands on type person rather than taking an examination. I wish you success as well.

Can you give us some clues about what the exam was like?  Were there any themes in style of questioning, diagnoses or assessments that appeared frequently or other relevant themes?  Now that you have sat the exam do you have any suggestions for study?

    Re: NBCOT Exam............

I haven't taken the exam yet.  I bought the study guide by Cottrell called "National Occupational Therapy Certification Exam" from www.therapyed.com and it is really helpful for study.  I also took the free practice exam they had on their website.

I would really like to hear from people who have taken the exam already as to common conditions covered and patient scenarios.

    Re: NBCOT Exam............

I just found another study guide that looks very promising..  It comes with 300 practice questions plus over 1000 things you should know before taking the exam.   I read a review on another site where they said it was a great read the week before taking the test and good for making flash cards.

    Hi!

I just took the OTR exam last week, and found that I failed. But I feel in the same way as you when I prepared for the test as you mention on Dec/4/2007. So, did you pass the OTR exam yet? If you did, what is your strategies to pass? Have you attended any review courses? I was thinking to take the review courses offered by TherapyEd.com, since I failed for the first time. I also went to another review course in early 2008, but according to my result of my test, it seems to be not very helpful. So I was wondering if the one from TherapyEd will be a good course for reviewing OTR exam.

Or, is there anyone know good materials and/or review courses for the exam?

    Thanks a lot!

    Re: NBCOT Exam............

I took the TherapyEd course and I thought it was great.  It really helped me understand how to pass the exam.  The book and CD were very helpful too.  I went through the practice questions on CD and they were a lot like the actual questions on the NBCOT.  I think it is a great course and highly recommend it.
