    Burns and OT

Does anybody have any good resources on OT for burn care?  I have someone with a 3rd degree burn in home care setting.  Any info or handouts for ROM would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Lindsey, I do not have any specific information for you, because I have never worked with burn patients. However, I have had personal experience with burns due to a house fire that my family experienced. I can't stress the importance of the psychological factor that accompanies the trauma, pain and disfigurement that ocurrs. The mental anguish is worse than the pain. Positioning, cleanliness and pain control is a concern for OT's, but don't the emotional support. Allow the patient to talk about the trauma so she/he can cope with what has happened. Oh and please watch for signs of infection. If the patient is having trouble sleeping, ask the doctor to consider sleeping pills. The pain may prevent a good night's sleep. Lack of sleep causes depression and there is enough pyschological stuff going on. Good Luck ! Mona-meow...meow <^^>

I will look in my file. I worked with burns for about 10 years. What stage is this burn? Has it been grafted? Where were the grafts taken from? Is the person receiving wound care?Where is the burn located? Does this person have scars anywhere on his body that have Keloid scar tissue? Tell me more.

    Sincerely Barb. barb_schoonover@yahoo.com

The wound care has been completed by nursing and I guess it is healed.  He did have a graft done over digits 2, 3, 4, more on the dorsal part.  I have not been treating him recently (having a COTA with hand experience doing it).  But any resources you could pass along will always help  me in the future.  If you have any patient hand outs for ROM, massage, etc. that would be great.

    Thanks

    Lindsey

Hi, I do have lots of handouts on all kinds of things. Where should I send them?

This message is late in response however I hope the following info will be helpful for any future burn patients you may have. The following website is up to date with the latest and greatest for clinicians - www.burntherapist.com. Also, the American Burn Association (www.ameriburn.org) is informative as well!

    Hope all went well!
