Experience vs new grads in this changing economy

    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had some good advice for an experienced COTA who works at a pediatric facility. My boss has been hiring more new graduates as opposed to experienced therapists to save money. Being in the field for almost 10 years, I would love the opportunities to work with some more experienced ones. Although fresh blood is a good thing, the age and maturity and experience issues are a concern to me at this point in my career. Any Ideas of ways to do so and expand my skills at this point in my career?

     Thanks!

Move to Texas and work for my pediatric facilities. I have 2 OT's with 5 and 10 yrs. of experience and 2 COTA's with 10 and 20 yrs. of experience.  Other then that you could talk to your boss and explain how an experienced therapist would benefit the company.  You could also find a new job with experienced therapist already in place.

Try to keep an open mind about the new grads, because it is going to continue as time goes on. I too am an experienced cota, and at first thought the new younger grads with the bigger degrees and more ed would be a issue for them working with me, but we have a nice balace of experience and new techniques. You could always go to seminars to help with cont ed.
